Mama and I enjoyed many kitchen dance parties over the years. As Alzheimer’s gradually took her inner chef away, I would go cook in her kitchen with my music loud-ish. I heard the same questions or comments every time- “Who are you cooking all this food for? That’s a lot of French toast. Jan, I don’t eat _____fill in the blank____ anymore. Two pots of soup?! Don’t use pepper. Who put this towel here? Why is this cabinet open?…” I can smile at these memories now. There were a few meals she could not resist- pork sausage with mashed potatoes and creamed corn, chipped beef on toast and, of course, Midwest Breakfast Company’s Combo Crepes-whipped cream on the side. There were also a few songs she couldn’t resist and she would get up from her computer solitaire and join me for a little dance party.
I danced and cooked all day today, Mama. My yellow bowl is finally at rest and so am I.
